How Aitor Throup took the football terrace to the runway and beyond

Aitor Throup: From Burnley to the World

Though born in Argentina, Aitor Throup has made Burnley his home since he was 12 years old. The local football culture has been a significant source of inspiration throughout his 22-year career. Throup’s collaborations with renowned brands like Stone Island and C.P. Company highlight his unique vision that blends diverse styles.

Merging Contrasts in Fashion

Throup stands out for his ability to juxtapose seemingly opposing elements. He seamlessly combines women’s tailoring with men’s streetwear and fuses Eastern religious motifs with Western football culture. His most acclaimed works arise from integrating the aesthetics of football fans with cutting-edge design. For instance, he has transformed the classic Gallagher parka with sheer paneling and reimagined C.P. Company’s iconic goggle jacket, which has a history of serving both as a fashion statement and a disguise for football hooligans.

A Retrospective at the British Textile Biennial

A new retrospective exhibition at the British Textile Biennial showcases Throup’s creative evolution through over a hundred garments and accessories. Titled “FROM THE MOOR,” the exhibit pays homage to a chant from Burnley FC that references the local Turf Moor stadium.

A Personal Declaration

For Throup, the title carries deep significance. “As an immigrant who was adopted by the town as a 12-year-old boy, I’m proud of these roots and declare them as my origin,” he explains. Yet, he also points out the contradiction inherent in the term “moor,” which historically references non-white invaders of Europe between 711 and 1492 AD. This duality reflects Throup’s complex relationship with identity and belonging, making his work not just a fashion statement but a commentary on culture and history.
