Following a series of vibrant art weeks in major cultural hubs like London, Paris, and Hong Kong, the global art scene culminated in Miami, widely regarded as the most extravagant venue. From December 5 to 7, the city transformed into a lavish showcase of luxury events, innovative installations, and an influx of VVIPs. Amid the flowing champagne and the bright lights, the excitement was palpable, even as preparations clashed with the Thanksgiving holiday, adding an extra layer of chaos to an already frenetic atmosphere. Yet, this is where gallerists shine, adeptly managing stress while driving sales long before arriving in Miami.
A Global Showcase
Top galleries from five continents made their way to Miami, presenting a remarkable array of artwork that spanned from timeless modern masters to the latest emerging talents. Whether attendees were there to buy or simply to be inspired, the event radiated creative energy. Austrian gallerist Thaddaeus Ropac remarked on the palpable momentum following recent successful events, stating, “There is a positive energy in Miami,” reflecting the optimism in the air despite previous record-breaking sales from Sotheby’s and Christie’s.
Miami’s Cultural Playground
Beyond the art, Miami morphed into a vibrant cultural playground. Attendees could indulge in exciting restaurant pop-ups, experience fashion collaborations, and enjoy nightlife that brought them face-to-face with celebrities, industry leaders, and even off-duty royals. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were sighted at the unveiling of Rocky’s Ray-Ban installation, while supermodel Karlie Kloss attended Cartier’s Art Basel dinner, contributing to the star-studded atmosphere.
Sukeban Wrestling
One of the standout events was the Sukeban Wrestling World Championship, held during Art Basel. This Japanese female wrestling league recently completed a string of sold-out shows in cities like New York and London. By intertwining performance art, fashion, and athleticism, Sukeban is reimagining live sports as an entertainment spectacle. The event featured collaborations with DJ ecec, accessories by Katie Hillier, and looks by Sukeban’s co-founder Olympia Le-Tan, proving that Miami always has surprises in store.
Slawn City: Art Meets Accessibility
London-based artist Slawn and Artifaxing launched Slawn City, a unique “tourist trap turned art shop,” during Miami Art Week. Their goal was to make art more accessible, showcasing streetwear, quirky toys, and various oddities. This initiative captured Slawn’s signature blend of sincerity and humor, all with a Miami flair. The collections, including apparel and toys, are now available for online purchase, inviting a wider audience to engage with the art world.
Celebrating FENDI
FENDI marked its 100th anniversary in style, debuting a collectible design installation that emphasized feminine strength and Italian craftsmanship. Titled “Fonderia Fendi,” this project was conceptualized by Argentinian designer Conie Vallese and featured stunning handblown vases created by five Italian ateliers. The trio of pastel vases in colors like ‘anice’ blue and ‘sorbetto’ yellow stole the show, showcasing the brand’s commitment to artistry and elegance.
Saint Week: A Cultural Takeover
The multimedia platform Saint & Citizen hosted a three-day cultural takeover known as Saint Week, featuring performances, discussions, and installations. Building on last year’s success, this year’s theme, “The Living Originals,” highlighted influential creators in contemporary culture. Standout moments included a conceptual performance by rap duo Clipse and an engaging discussion with Ty Dolla $ign. The week culminated in a star-studded afterparty featuring performances by Miguel and KWN, leaving attendees eagerly anticipating next year’s edition.
Cartier’s ‘Into the Wild’
Cartier’s ‘Into the Wild’ exhibition in the Design District provided an immersive experience centered around the iconic panther motif. First introduced in 1914, the panther has been a symbol of the brand, brought to life by Jeanne Toussaint. Visitors explored five distinct spaces, each showcasing original collections alongside contemporary pieces, all enhanced by cinematic storytelling. This luxurious experience offered a deep dive into a century-long legacy of panther-inspired creations.
Jimmy Choo & Harry Nuriev Collaboration
Jimmy Choo continued its creative collaboration with Harry Nuriev, the founder of Crosby Studios, unveiling a striking installation at the Design District boutique. This immersive art piece transformed the space with a giant high-heeled shoe that seemed to burst through the store, making a bold statement. The innovative design captured the essence of both brands, merging fashion and art in a memorable way.
