An Embrace of Festive Spirit
Gaudy, tacky, kitsch? These terms might describe a wildly decorated, brightly lit tree at any other time of year. However, come December, the standards of taste shift dramatically. Childhood joy and the spirit of celebration take center stage, allowing bauble-clad trees to flourish in cities everywhere.
Luxurious Displays
Luxury hotels often lead the charge, partnering with artists and designers to create stunning tree displays that overshadow the modest ones in our homes. We’ve compiled some of the most remarkable trees from recent years that completely defy the ‘tacky’ label, with some even available for viewing this holiday season.
Dishoom’s Festive Collaboration
This year, London’s Dishoom restaurant is teaming up with Diet Paratha, a respected voice in South Asian culture, to curate an artist-driven celebration of the festive season. The event aims to reimagine Christmas through the lens of South Asian talent and craftsmanship. Three artists—luxury fashion house Kartik Research, designer Dhruv Bandil, and stylist Neesha Tulsi Champaneria—were commissioned to create bespoke Christmas tree installations that reflect their unique heritage and aesthetics.
The Crystal Dream at The Londoner
A highlight of this year’s festive season is the tree at The Londoner hotel, crafted in collaboration with designer Susan Fang. Titled “The Crystal Dream Christmas Tree,” this stunning all-white installation is adorned with transparent spheres and 3D-printed flowers, a hallmark of Fang’s work. Drawing inspiration from nature and ethereal forms, the tree transforms the hotel lobby into a dreamy winter wonderland.
Claridge’s Annual Reveal
London’s Claridge’s hotel has made a tradition out of unveiling a new designer collaboration for its Christmas tree each year, and 2023 is no exception. This year, Burberry’s creative director, Daniel Lee, takes the spotlight. Set to be revealed on November 25, the tree promises to be a lavish spectacle, draped in exquisite bows.
A Topsy-Turvy Creation
In 2017, Claridge’s also showcased a unique interpretation of the Christmas tree, courtesy of Karl Lagerfeld. The hotel lobby featured a series of trees hanging from the ceiling, adorned with frosty decorations, creating a wonderfully whimsical and topsy-turvy effect that captivated visitors.
Tracey Emin’s Poetic Tribute
The Connaught Hotel presented a remarkable 30-foot Norway tree designed by the renowned British artist Tracey Emin in 2024. Emin honored the hotel with a heartfelt poem, rendered in neon text, a medium she is celebrated for. This striking installation effectively captures the festive spirit and adds a layer of emotional depth to the holiday season.
