A New Wave in UK Music
KiLLOWEN embodies the charming spirit of Britain’s contemporary music scene. Hailing from West London and the suburbs of Buckinghamshire, this MC seamlessly blends cheeky lyricism with the rhythms of UK Garage (UKG). His unique style is evident in his debut EP, 2023’s *Pub Therapy*, where revelry meets introspection, a juxtaposition that resonates with listeners.
Evolution of an Artist
KiLLOWEN’s journey into music began at an early age. He discovered FL Studio through his brother, a drum and bass DJ, sparking his interest in production. His early experiments with dubstep, aided by YouTube tutorials, paved the way for his deep dive into rap. Alongside guitar playing and a passion for rap instrumentals, these experiences shaped his eclectic musical palette.
Influences and Sound
His influences span across genres, reflecting a postmodern approach to music creation. “Everything I listened to growing up amalgamated into one,” he shared during his interview with END. Artists like Skepta, Boy Better Know, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, and Tyler, The Creator helped cultivate a sound that defies categorization.
Blending Genres
KiLLOWEN’s work also honors the 140 classics of UKG, resulting in a down-to-earth sound that resonates with a diverse audience. His 2023 track, “One Thing,” is a prime example, sampling Amerie’s 2005 hit “1 Thing” and infusing it with syncopated hi-hats and a vibrant bassline. The introspective lyrics evoke the style of a young Mike Skinner, combining a playful vibe with thoughtful reflection.
The Future Ahead
As he prepares for his 2025 release, *Six Missed Calls*, KiLLOWEN continues to explore themes of manhood, pride, and romance. This upcoming project promises to further establish his connection with a softer breed of Gen-Z lads, making a significant mark on the British rap scene. With each release, KiLLOWEN is proving that tenderness can coexist with the grit of urban life.
