Soki Mak Talks Pamela Anderson, Creative Direction and Hulu's 'All's Fair'

If Soki Mak is a name you haven’t heard before, prepare to be introduced to an exciting new talent in the fashion industry. Known for her collaborations with iconic figures like Pamela Anderson and Rosalía, Mak has also co-created Nadia Lee Cohen’s Women. However, her latest venture marks a significant shift as she steps into television for the first time, thanks to her newfound friendship with Kim Kardashian.

A New Role in Television

Mak has joined the creative team behind Ryan Murphy’s upcoming series, All’s Fair. The partnership began when Kardashian reached out to her via Instagram DMs. From that initial conversation, their collaboration blossomed, transforming Mak’s role from costume designer to a full-fledged creative director. She oversees the stunning looks in the show, particularly those worn by Kardashian’s character, Allura. The costumes feature unique archival pieces from legendary designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, and Balenciaga, creating a fashion lover’s paradise.

Early Beginnings

Reflecting on her career, Mak reveals that her journey began with a departure from university in Glasgow just months after starting. With an early passion for fashion and the arts, she explored fine art before believing she wanted to become a womenswear designer. Her time at Central Saint Martins included internships at Dazed and with Vivienne Westwood, where she encountered stylists who inspired her to pursue styling.

Initially, the world of creative direction was unknown to her, yet necessity drove her to develop skills as an independent artist. She learned to conceptualize and create mood boards, leading her down a path that didn’t involve a formal title but was nonetheless deeply fulfilling.

Transitioning to Costume Design

Mak’s transition to costume design was a natural progression in her creative journey. She was always involved in the conceptual phases of her projects, and it wasn’t until working on All’s Fair that she recognized costume design as a viable career path. For her, styling was just one aspect of a broader creative process.

Collaborating with Kim Kardashian

The collaboration with Kim Kardashian came about quite organically. After meeting before their Instagram exchange, Mak initially thought the message from Kardashian was a hoax. However, their conversations quickly evolved into brainstorming sessions filled with creative ideas. Kardashian was trusting and allowed Mak to bring her preferred team on board, which helped solidify their partnership.

Their first creative project together set the stage for future collaborations. When Kardashian informed Mak about the new show, she was pulled in at the last moment, leading to a whirlwind of activities that solidified their working relationship.

The Creative Process

Describing the creative process for All’s Fair, Mak candidly admits that the early stages were chaotic. It was a learning experience for everyone involved, as many team members were new to the television realm. The challenge of having two costume designers on the same show added to the complexity.

After a few days of uncertainty, Mak approached the project as she would an editorial shoot, developing a creative board for Allura. She and Kardashian exchanged images for hair, makeup, and archival looks, laying the foundation for the character’s style. As the filming progressed, their collaboration flowed naturally, despite the intense pace.

Sourcing Iconic Looks

One of Mak’s favorite aspects of the project was working with Jean Paul Gaultier. Gaining access to the brand’s archives felt like a dream, allowing her to incorporate historical pieces into the show’s wardrobe. Many of these looks date back to the 1980s, and even in the rush of production, their significance was not lost on her.

As All’s Fair prepares for its release on Hulu, the anticipation for Mak’s unique vision and the fashion-forward elements she brings to the show only continues to grow.
