Tara Lily on Channeling Something Raw and Real

Tara Lily: A Unique Musical Perspective

Tara Lily is redefining the music scene with her distinctive blend of influences. The British-Bengali artist from South London merges her dual heritage to create a sound that effortlessly transitions between jazz, R&B, and electronic genres, while incorporating elements of traditional Bengali folk. The result is an intimate and spellbinding soundscape.

Quiet Nights EP

Her latest EP, Quiet Nights, exemplifies this duality. Produced in collaboration with UK artist King Krule, who also lends his voice to the standout track “Tropical Storm,” the project is mastered by Dom Valentino, known for his work with Greentea Peng and Skepta. Quiet Nights serves as an authentic reflection of London’s cultural melting pot and showcases Lily’s evolving artistry.

Musical Journey

Lily’s journey into music has been anything but conventional. Born to a Scottish punk singer and a Bengali folk musician, she was raised in South London. Expelled from the BRIT School due to behavioral issues and undiagnosed ADHD, she later found her footing studying jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. Throughout her journey, she has embraced the ups and downs, motivated by her passion for creativity.

Collaboration with King Krule

The collaboration with King Krule arose naturally, as they have been part of the same social scene for years. Their creative partnership solidified during the lockdown, allowing them to explore their musical synergy in-depth.

Creative Process

When it comes to her creative process, Lily prefers to start her songs alone, often at the piano or synth in the dark, with a drink by her side. The view of London’s skyline from her bedroom window serves as a source of inspiration, allowing her to gaze out as she plays.

Sources of Inspiration

Lily draws inspiration from her heritage, surroundings, and life experiences. Her music reflects an amalgamation of her past, her education, and the mistakes she has made along the way.

The Message of Quiet Nights

The EP carries a personal message, encapsulating a period of introspection and beauty. For Lily, Quiet Nights represents a time of raw authenticity, where she stripped back her layers and connected with her true self.

Life on Tour

Having shared stages with King Krule and Grammy-winning artist Raye, Lily has embraced the touring lifestyle. However, as a health enthusiast, she faces unique challenges on the road. During her recent tour in America, she found it difficult to source nutritious food. To cope, she stocked up on Whole Foods seaweed, dried mushrooms, and spirulina, often preparing it in boiling water.

The extreme cold during her tour presented another challenge, as she braved temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius. Sleeping in the bottom bunk of the tour bus required her to wear multiple layers, including her Afghan coat, hat, gloves, and goatskin boots. Despite the hardships, she cherishes the incredible experience of performing.

What’s Next for Tara Lily?

Looking toward the future, Lily is excited about her upcoming record currently in the works. Fans can expect more of her unique sound and artistry soon.
