Your Definitive Guide to Luxury Fashion's Game of Creative Director Musical Chairs

Industry Shakeups

After more than a year of high-profile announcements from fashion leaders like Donatella Versace, Demna, and Jonathan Anderson, the phrase “luxury slow-down” seems increasingly misplaced. Keeping track of the frequent changes in creative leadership across various brands has become a challenge. Given this dynamic environment, we decided to compile an ongoing record of the latest transitions in luxury fashion.

Recent Departures

In the past year, several notable designers have exited their roles. Maria Grazia Chiuri bid farewell to Dior, while Casey Cadwallader stepped down from Mugler. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have taken over at LOEWE, replacing Jonathan Anderson, who left Balenciaga for Gucci as Donatella Versace stepped down as chief creative officer. December 2024 saw Matthieu Blazy depart from Bottega Veneta for Chanel, with Louise Trotter stepping in as his successor. Meanwhile, Dries Van Noten also left his namesake brand, appointing Julian Klausner as the new creative director, and David Koma joined Blumarine.

Available Talent

These shifts have left a number of talented creative directors without positions, sparking speculation about their potential moves to other luxury labels. Notable names such as Kim Jones, John Galliano, and Riccardo Tisci remain on the hunt for new opportunities.

Balmain’s Creative Director: TBC

Olivier Rousteing recently announced his departure from Balmain, capping off an impressive 14-year tenure. He expressed pride in his accomplishments and gratitude to his team, stating, “I will always hold this treasured time close to my heart” as he embarks on a new chapter in his creative journey.

Hermes’ New Creative Director: Grace Wales Bonner

Grace Wales Bonner has been appointed as the new Creative Director of Hermes menswear, succeeding Véronique Nichanian. This historic appointment marks her as the first Black woman to lead design at a major European luxury house, highlighting a significant milestone in the industry.

Fendi’s Creative Director: Maria Grazia Chiuri

Following Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy, Silvia Venturini Fendi took over Fendi’s creative direction in 2019. She was later joined by Kim Jones as artistic director for womenswear in 2020, a role he left in 2024. In September 2025, Silvia announced her transition to honorary president, paving the way for Maria Grazia Chiuri to take the reins. In her statement, Chiuri reflected on her journey, stating, “I return to Fendi with honour and joy, having had the privilege of beginning my career under the guidance of the House’s founders.”

Proenza Schouler’s Creative Director: Rachel Scott

Rachel Scott is the newly appointed Creative Director of Proenza Schouler, succeeding Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough. Her debut collection is set for February 2026. In her announcement, Scott expressed enthusiasm for joining a brand she greatly admires, stating, “I look forward to bringing my perspective into dialogue with their legacy.”

Marni’s Creative Director: Meryll Rogge

As of July 15, 2025, Meryll Rogge has taken over as Creative Director at Marni, succeeding Francesco Risso. Rogge is among the few female appointments in this year’s luxury sector shifts and brings experience from previous roles at Marc Jacobs and Dries Van Noten.

Dior’s Creative Director: Jonathan Anderson

Dior has seen its share of significant changes, with John Galliano serving from 1996 to 2011 and Raf Simons taking over in 2012. Maria Grazia Chiuri, who led as women’s artistic director since 2016, recently announced her departure. She expressed her gratitude in a statement, noting the impact of her team and their collaboration with various generations of female artists. Following her exit, Jonathan Anderson has been named Creative Director for both menswear and womenswear, effective June 2, 2025. He shared, “It is a great honor to join the House of Dior as Creative Director of both women’s and men’s collections.”
